Unprecedented research shows that the LGBTQIA+ community has a lot to fight for

Who are we really?

Or rather, who we really are as an LGBTQIAPN+ community?

Sometimes we get to know some of ourselves before we recognize ourselves.

Without looking at research and just relying on perception, we can say: We are many.

But how many? It does make a difference knowing how many and where we are.

From the different perspectives of those who carry the weight of the flag, we are, admittedly, almost 16 million people, which corresponds to 18% of the Brazilian population, according to figures released today by the Havaianas partner with the Datafolha institute. There were 3,674 people aged 16 and over who responded to questions re-signified in data capable of promoting advances for the LGBTQIA+ population.

How to transform reality without first knowing it? This was one of the main issues discussed to arrive at the need for the study, as told by the brand’s vice president of Marketing, Maria Fernanda Albuquerque: “What you can’t measure, you can’t transform. The data that you cannot see generally does not exist.”

And yes, we exist and we are part of this society that does everything to expel us. a finding that unfortunately reveals itself in numbers as 62% of the economically active population do not feel comfortable talking about their sexual orientation or gender identity at work. And this subject is addressed sometimes, rarely, or never. That sad.

And it doesn’t stop there: 17% of the LGBTQIAPN+ population said they always experience discrimination.

Only 34% of people, who do not declare themselves in the community, fully agree that they consider displays of affection between homosexual couples in public to be common.

And to close, one in four people who do not identify as LGBTQIAPN+ do not fully agree that people in the community should have the same rights as any other citizen.

How to fight for our rights when there is still a good part of the population that does not believe that we should be guaranteed?

According to Maria Fernanda, this action can start through corporate initiatives, such as the one that happened to carry out this research. “The companies gained a very important role in society. They must position themselves according to their beliefs, values and make this community voice amplification, show it to the world. IT IS this participation, this positioning, this active posture of transformation is fundamental”, he said.

And these changes are not restricted to the national territory, as 69 countries have some law that criminalizes the LGBTQIAPN+ community. In this sense, the NGO All Out in almost all continents and seeks to promote actions in partnership with local organizations, as explained by Ana Andrade, senior campaign manager at All Out in Latin America:

“The fact that we are engaged with these movements around the world helps support struggles at the times when they need our help most. I think the most important thing for me is precisely this global and partnership aspect, of not doing anything alone, because we strongly believe in the collective construction of activism.”

Without these international partnerships, resistance would be even more arduous even at home. The research also showed that, andIn comparison with the rest of the population, hostility or prejudice within the family is 16 percentage points higher among LGBTQIAPN+ people.

We are people like any other. There’s nothing wrong with our existence, there’s nothing wrong with the way we love, the way we live, the way we do our thing

Ana Andrade, Senior Campaign Manager at All Out in Latin America

Remember that one in four who believes that we in the community shouldn’t have the same rights as the rest of the population? That’s the wrong. And for him to lose strength, we need to shed light on the numbers that show the challenges to keep the flag up.
