The United States House of Representatives voted to dismiss Representative Kevin McCarthy as president of the legislative house this Tuesday (3). This is the first time that a president of the Chamber has been deposed through the approval of a resolution to do so.
The vote was 216 votes in favor and 210 against, with eight Republicans voting to remove McCarthy from office.
Now, the House needs to elect a new president, but it is unclear who would have the necessary support to win.
The Republicans who voted for impeachment were: Andy Biggs, Ken Buck, Tim Burchett, Eli Crane, Matt Gaetz, Bob Good, Nancy Mace and Matt Rosendale.
The House speaker’s race marks a major escalation in tensions for a House Republican Party conference that is mired in infighting.
This also comes just days after McCarthy successfully articulated a bipartisan blueprint to avoid a U.S. government shutdown.
Rep. Matt Gaetz called Kevin McCarthy “a swamp creature” after his impeachment. “He rose to power by collecting special interest money and redistributing that money in exchange for favors,” Gaetz alleged.
“We are ‘breaking the fever’ and we should elect a speaker who is better,” he added.
Asked if he would now nominate Rep. Steve Scalise for speaker, Gaetz responded: “I think the world of Steve Scalise. I think he would be a phenomenal speaker.”
