Union says Sabesp employee strike will end at midnight

The Union of Water, Sewage and Environmental Workers of the state of São Paulo (Sintaema) stated, this Tuesday (3), that the strike by Sabesp employees will end at midnight this Wednesday (4).

The company’s workers joined the unified strike with the Metro and Railway unions, since midnight on Tuesday, to protest against concessions, outsourcing and privatizations of Sabesp, Metrô and Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos (CPTM).

According to the president of Sintaema, José Faggian, the strike would not affect the water supply and sewage service, with essential services being met.

“The population will not suffer an interruption in their water supply,” said Faggian.

The Regional Labor Court (TRT) of the 2nd Region determined that 85% of the company’s employees work. If the measure was not met, a daily fine of up to R$500,000 was established.

Government says strike is “illegal and abusive”

The government of São Paulo stated, last Monday (2), that the strike by Metrô, CPTM and Sabesp is “illegal and abusive”.

“It is absolutely unjustifiable that a constitutional instrument for the defense of workers is hijacked by unions for political and ideological attacks on the current management,” said the Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) management in a statement.

According to the statement, the strike was not called to demand salary or labor issues, “but, rather, for the unions to act, in a totally irresponsible and undemocratic way, to oppose a government agenda that was defended and legitimately supported at the polls.” ”.
