UNICEF says 120 children have been killed in Gaza in the last 15 days

According to information from the UN children’s agency (UNICEF) this Wednesday (15), at least 120 Palestinian children have been killed in Gaza in the last 15 days.

An Israeli attack in Deir Al Balah on Tuesday left 12 people from the same family dead, including the wife and four children of Raafat Salha, an aid worker in Gaza, according to the Independent Commission for Human Rights ( ICHR).

Salha, director of the ICHR, was seriously injured and had his leg amputated, the Palestinian Authority-backed commission added.

In response to a question about the attack on Salha’s home, the Israeli Army said it hit a “terrorist from the Islamic Jihad military intelligence unit who was operating in the humanitarian area in Deir al Balah.”

An Israeli airstrike left at least seven dead at the Al-Farabi school in Gaza City last night, where Palestinians were sheltering, authorities at the Al-Ahli Baptist hospital said on Wednesday (15). In Al Bureij, a refugee camp in central Gaza, several people were killed after airstrikes hit the area.

The Israeli Army said it hit a “terrorist” on Tuesday (14) who was operating “within a command and control center, which previously served as a school.” The army added that it had also struck more than 50 targets in Gaza over the past day.

On Tuesday (14), at least 54 people were killed in Gaza, according to information from local authorities.

Meanwhile, an Israeli military spokesman warned residents of a neighborhood in Jabalya, northern Gaza, to leave before an Israeli attack due to rocket fire from the area by “terrorist organizations.”

The Israeli government and Hamas agreed to a ceasefire for the Gaza Strip and the gradual release of Palestinian hostages and prisoners. The information was confirmed by sources CNN and, subsequently, the Prime Minister of Qatar held a press conference announcing the understanding.

Hamas and allied groups are expected to release 33 hostages in the first phase, which will begin on January 19. In return, Israel will release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.

Understand the conflict in the Gaza Strip

Israel has carried out intense airstrikes in the Gaza Strip since 2023, after Hamas invaded the country and killed 1,200 people, according to Israeli counts. In addition, the group holds dozens of hostages.

Hamas does not recognize Israel as a state and claims Israeli territory for Palestine.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly promised to destroy Hamas’ military capabilities and recover people detained in Gaza.

In addition to the air offensive, the Israeli Army carries out land incursions into Palestinian territory. This caused much of Gaza’s population to be displaced.

The UN and several humanitarian institutions have warned of a catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, with a lack of food, medicine and the spread of diseases.

The Israeli population is constantly protesting against Netanyahu, accusing the prime minister of failing to reach a ceasefire agreement so that the hostages can be released.
