Giovanni Angelo Becciu, a cardinal convicted of financial crimes by the Vatican, says he can participate in the next conclave, despite being listed as a “non -voter” in the list released by the Holy See.
He was once one of the most powerful figures of the Vatican, but received an order from Pope Francis in 2020 to resign Cardinal’s “rights and privileges” after the scandal.
Although Becciu lost his rights and privileges as a cardinal, he was never technically removed from the Cardinal College. Thus, you are allowed to participate in pre-competition discussions.
In an interview with the Italian newspaper L’entone Sarda on Tuesday (22), he argued that the Pope had no right to exclude him from the election, since he had not explicitly resigned.
“The list [dos eleitores do conclave] Published by the Holy See has no value and must be considered as such, ”he said.
Thus, the decision on your participation must be made by the dean – the oldest member – of the Cardinal College, Giovanni Battista re and by cardinal Pietro Parolin that will supervise the procedures of the conclave inside the Sistine Chapel.
