Understand what surgery Preta Gil will undergo to remove a tumor in the intestine

Singer Preta Gil, 49, was admitted to the Sírio-Libanês Hospital last Sunday (13) to prepare for the removal of the tumor identified in her intestine, which will take place this Wednesday (16).

On her Instagram, Preta updated fans about her pre-op routine, which includes a complete colonoscopy. The artist spoke about the exam that can prevent and diagnose the pathology.

“Colonoscopy is an exam that visualizes the large intestine until it reaches the small intestine. It is recommended in case of symptoms such as bleeding in the stool, diarrhea, trapped intestines and abdominal pain. For the population without symptoms, the ideal is to take the exam from the age of 45 and repeat it every 10 years”, said the singer.

A CNN physician Luiza Dib, oncologist and Clinical Research Coordinator at Hospital Sírio-Libanês de Brasília, detailed how the bowel tumor develops in the body and how the surgery is performed for its removal.

According to the doctor, tumors in the intestine originate from polyps, benign lesions that do not give symptoms to patients, but which still need prevention.

“The current recommendation is that every adult over 45 years old should start screening tests, because, in fact, we want to prevent bowel tumors,” said the specialist.

“If I find a polyp in a colonoscopy exam and I remove that polyp, this lesion will not turn into a tumor in the future”, he added.

The polyps on Preta Gil’s body evolved into an adenocarcinoma, malignant tumor that can affect various segments of the digestive tract, including the final part of the intestine.

How is the surgery

There are two options for surgery to remove the tumor in the intestine, also known as colon cancer, in an advanced stage.

“The surgery can be done through the traditional route, which we call the open route, the one that has cuts, but videolaparoscopy is increasingly being used, surgery performed by video and in some cases it even receives the help of a robot”, explained Dib.

Still according to the specialist, the procedure performed by video has an advantage over the traditional one.

“The advantage of the video operation is a faster recovery of the patient, since the surgical incisions are made with small cuts”, he added.

Postoperative

One of the main questions about surgeries concerns the postoperative period and the patient’s recovery.

As the doctor reported, the postoperative conditions of this type of surgery are usually favorable to patients, even with limitations and adaptations.

“The patient recovers in a few days. The transit of the intestine can be altered by a surgery like this, so, in cases where the patient uses the colostomy bag, there is an adaptation. He needs to learn how to deflate, know how soon this bag needs to be changed, ”he explained.

Finally, the specialist pointed out that the purpose of the procedure is to resect the entire tumor, but that in cases in the intestine, part of the organ needs to be removed.

“[Por ter a necessidade de remover parte do intestino] It’s just that we indicate surgery in cases where we know that the tumor has a chance of being removed completely”, concluded the oncologist.
