A few days after OpenAi launched the most advanced artificial intelligence image generator so far, a trend imitating the work of the Japanese animation company Studio Ghibli On social networks is demonstrating both the power of technology and the copyright concerns it raises.
The latest GPT-4O update, launched on Tuesday (24), features many practical advances, including more accurate text rendering and the ability to follow more detailed and complex prompts, but it was also trained in a “vast variety of image styles,” according to an OpenAi publication, impressing users with the ability to generate popular animations and videos.
A specific style quickly flooded X and Instagram, when ChatgPT users began to imitate the work of the beloved animation studio behind films such as “The Travel of Chihiro” and “The Animated Castle.”
Some scenes recreated of pop culture or politics in the iconic style of the Japanese company, including a reworked trailer of “The Lord of the Rings: The Ring Society”, “Soprana Family” scenes and the Heated Exchange of Bartas in the White House between Donald Trump and JD Vance with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Some of the most viral posts gave a Ghibli touch to popular memes, including the “distracted boyfriend”, the “bro explaining” meme and the infamous image of Ben Affleck smoking. Another X’s viral post portrayed the platform owner, Elon Musk, playing with cutlery – an image based on the recent video of the billionaire balancing spoons during a dinner offered by Trump in New Jersey.

Also widely shared, however, it is a 2016 video in which Studio Ghibli co -founder Hayao Miyazaki describes the art generated by AI as an “insult to his own life.” Miyazaki is known for his hand -drawn animation and its meticulous picture method.
“I’m completely disgusted,” he says in the video, responding to a video of a monster character generated using text prompts. “If you really want to do scary things, you can go ahead and do, but I would never want to incorporate this technology into my work.”
OpenAi’s up -to -date image generator also provoked discussions about the role of AI and art. This happens a few weeks after nearly 4,000 people signing an open letter asking the Christie’s auction house to cancel an unprecedented sale dedicated exclusively to AI art due to concerns that the programs used to create some general digital pieces are trained in copyright -protected work and explore human artists.
OpenAi CEO, Sam Altman, made a little case of the X trend, joking that after “a decade trying to help create superintelligence to cure cancer or something,” were the images of Studio Ghibli that generated viral interest in their work.
“No one cares in the first 7.5 years, then, for 2.5 years, everyone hates you for everything,” he wrote.
“Wake up one day with hundreds of messages: ‘Look, I turned you into a Twink Ghibli Style Haha’,” Altman added, referring to a gay slang to men who are young, children’s and thin.
As is the case with AI -generated art, images raise various copyright issues – not just around Studio Ghibli’s work, but from the images being reinvented.
When the CNN He asked ChatgPT to reproduce some of the Ghibli -style memes, the service refused, saying that “the request did not follow our content policy.”
