Understand how to cancel MEI in a simple way

The Individual Microentrepreneur (MEI) is a simplified form of business registration in Brazil, aimed mainly at individual entrepreneurs with limited annual revenue.

However, there are situations in which someone may need or choose to close their registration, either because they no longer want to be a business or the company has changed size.

But how to cancel the MEI? There is a simple step-by-step guide to do this. Understand below.

How to cancel the MEI?

To cancel the MEI, you need to access the Entrepreneur Portal, request the cancellation, log into your Gov.br account, check the data and sign the cancellation declaration.

Understand each step.

Access the Portal and request

How to request a mei drop

The first step when canceling the MEI is to access the Entrepreneur Portal.

You can click on the option “I am already MEI” and be redirected to another page that will have the option to cancel the company.

However, the quickest way is to access the “Request Download” button, which is available in the quick access section of services.

Login to the Gov.br account

How to enter MEI

When clicking on the “Request download” button, you will be redirected to the access area of your Gov.br account

If you do not have this registration for any reason, click on the button Create Gov.br Account. If you have, just enter your login and password to enter.

Check company data

Once that’s done, it’s time to check the details of the company you want to close. They will have information such as business name, business name, CPF, CNPJ, current status, start date and business address.

Sign the discharge statement

MEI write-off statement

After looking at all the data, you need to sign the discharge declaration.

It is worth mentioning that the decline is permanent and cannot be reversed. By clicking “Continue”, you will receive proof of your registration status. Issue and save in case you need to use it in the future.

Regularize payment and declaration

After canceling the MEI, in fact, it is necessary to regularize the declaration and payment of the DAS.

This happens because the cancellation of the registration, without paying off the debts, does not prevent taxes, contributions and due penalties resulting from lack of payment or proven irregularities from being charged to your CPF in the future.

Therefore, if it is necessary to pay off debts in the Simplified Collection Document (DAS-MEI), the step by step is:

  • Access Simples Nacional;
  • Inform the CNPJ;
  • Generate the invoice for any outstanding debts;
  • Make payment.

Another important step after closing the MEI is to make the Annual Declaration of the Simples Nacional Special Situation.

In it, the revenue obtained during the last year of the company must be informed. If you download in 2023, you must submit the Special Situation DASN for the period of 2023 that you were active.

So the steps are:

  • Access the Simples Nacional Portal;
  • Inform the CNPJ;
  • Review the form;
  • Finalize and send.

Close company bank account

Another warning that may be valid is that as your MEI will be cancelled, you cannot maintain bank accounts in its name. So, it is important to cancel.

Are there costs to close the MEI?

There are no direct costs for closing the MEI. If there are pending issues, such as debts that have not been paid off, this may involve indirect expenses during the closing process.

How long does it take for the MEI to be canceled?

The withdrawal takes place on the same day, so the process is automatic.

Is it possible to cancel the MEI with debts?

Yes, it is possible to cancel MEI with debts, but if the debt is not paid, it will remain active in your CPF, being registered in the Union’s Active Debt.

Is it possible to reactivate the MEI after it has been cancelled?

No. Every write-off is definitive and there is no way to reopen the same CNPJ. However, it is possible to create another MEI after canceling it.
