UN: MPs from 64 countries signed an agreement against hunger and malnutrition

In the signing of a global agreement to fight hunger, which affects 828 million people around the world, parliamentarians from 64 countries proceeded during a session convened by UN in Valparaiso, Chile.

This second world parliamentary session against hunger and the malnutritioninitiated mainly by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), gathered over two days in the Chilean parliament 150 parliamentarians, in addition to dozens of others who participated remotely.

After this meeting, the participants signed a global agreement whose purpose is to motivate member states, especially their parliaments, to fight against famine and malnutrition.

It envisages, for example, the strengthening of international parliamentary alliances and the creation of new ones, in order to favor the exchange of experiences, good practices and the elaboration of solutions.

“It is the entry into a new phase of interaction between parliaments. Parliaments should take on more and more responsibilities”FAO Deputy Director Mario Lubetkin told AFP.

According to the UN, 828 million people suffered from malnutrition in 2021 in the world, 46 million more than in 2020 and 150 million more than in 2019. A situation exacerbated, among others, by conflicts, climate change and the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Every day in the world, 8,500 children die because of hunger”, said Chilean MP Carolina Marchand, who chairs the Parliamentary Front Against Famine in Chile. Women are more exposed than men, according to the FAO.

A third session is expected to be held in Africa in 2026 to assess the results of the arrangements decided in Chile.
