A group of United Nations experts specializing in issues racism and which was founded after the death, in 2020, of the African-American George Floyd while he is in police custody, he will visit the US next week.
The group is called “Expert Mechanism for the Promotion of Justice and Racial Equality in the Preservation of Order». He will pay a two-day visit to USA and will move to Washington, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Chicago, Minneapolis and New York.
The three independent investigators will meet with federal, state and local officials, law enforcement, civil society representatives and members of communities affected by racism, the group said. They will also visit places of detention.
“We want to get a firsthand idea of the experiences of people of African descent in the US” said Juan Mendes, one of those experts according to the Athens News Agency.
The experts also want to examine current law and practice regarding police use of force, and whether police authorities are complying with international law. Subsequently “make recommendations on the measures needed to ensure access to justice; the accountability and imposition of sanctions for excessive violence and other human rights violations committed by agents of the security services against Africans and persons of African descent in the US,” the group added.
The body was established in 2021, a year after Floyd was killed by a white police officer, to investigate allegations of racially motivated police brutality around the world.
