The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on Tuesday that its experts were “closely monitoring the situation” and that “there is no immediate nuclear safety risk” at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant after the destruction of a large dam nearby.
The Nova Kakhovka dam in the Kherson region supplied water to much of southeastern Ukraine, including the upriver Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which is also under Russian control.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s nuclear agency said on Tuesday that the destruction of the dam could have negative consequences for the nuclear power plant, but the situation was under control.
“Water from the Kakhovka reservoir is needed for the power plant to receive refilling of turbine condensers and safety systems from the ZNPP,” Energoatom said in a statement on Telegram.
“The cooling pond is now full: from 8 am [horário local]the water level is 16.6 meters, which is sufficient for the plant’s needs.”
A spokesman for Ukraine’s armed forces also said on Tuesday that the situation at the factory was “under control”.
Ukraine blamed Russia for the dam’s explosion, while a senior Russian-installed official said its destruction was “a serious terrorist attack”.
