Brazilian pharmaceutical scientist Rodolfo Caires is working on the Ukrainian border to help war refugees. He lives in Ireland, but decided to travel to the region, with a desire to “do more for people.”
In an interview with CNN Radio, he said that Ukrainians arrive scared once they cross the border into Poland. “Yesterday I transferred a lady from Kharkiv, arrived in Lviv, did not know where to go, where to rest, she was so afraid of the unknown that she was willing to take the train back, more willing to face the war than the unknown .”
And that’s where, according to him, the role of the volunteer comes in, to guide “how to do the procedure, offer help to make them feel more welcomed, that’s what makes the difference. And the gratitude we get back is rewarding.”
Rodolfo also told the story of Ukrainian soldier Oleg, who fought in the Crimean war, but was wounded and released from the current conflict: “he was sad to leave Ukraine with his wife, he wanted to fight for the country, we see people wanting to fight across the country, the warrior spirit is very moving, patriotism is on fire.”
The volunteer explained that the daily routine starts in Poland. Very early in the morning, he and the other people from the Brazucra Front go shopping, fill the car with food, water, non-perishable products and medicines.
“After that, we cross the border, distribute groceries and, on the way back, we bring refugees in our car and then drop them off at humanitarian centers. There, they will be sent to other cities and be registered”.
