The Ukrainians have regained control of the entire Kiev region after the withdrawal of Russian forces from key cities on the outskirts of the Ukrainian capital, said Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar.
“The communities of Irpin, Buca, Hostomel and the whole of Kiev have been liberated from the invaders,” Maliar said in a Facebook post.
All of these cities have been devastated by the fighting raging since the beginning of the Russian invasion on February 24.
Last Monday, the Ukrainians announced that they had recaptured Irpin, which had been under Russian control since late February. Today, journalists of the French Agency managed to go to Boutsa, where access to the press has been denied for about a month.
The Ukrainian government estimates that Russian forces are “rapidly withdrawing” from the regions of Kiev and Chernihiv in northern Ukraine, with the aim of regrouping in the east and south.
