Ukraine’s wheat crop to fall 42% in 2022, union predicts

Ukraine’s 2022 wheat harvest is expected to fall to 19.2 million tonnes from a record 33 million tonnes in 2021, the Ukrainian grain traders union UGA said on Wednesday, although it estimates levels records for grain inventories due to lower exports.

Ukrainian officials and analysts say hostilities in many parts of the country could make harvesting impossible. The union did not officially specify a reason for the drop.

The UGA said this year’s corn production could also fall to 26.1 million tonnes from 37.6 million tonnes in 2021, while barley production could fall to 6.6 million tonnes from 10.1 millions of tons.

The union expects Ukraine to be able to export 10 million tonnes of wheat and 15 million tonnes of corn, although current export capacity cannot exceed 18 million tonnes for the entire season.

“At the same time, exports from Ukraine in the new season could reach 30 million tonnes, provided that the traffic capacity at Ukraine’s borders is doubled,” the UGA said in a statement.

The union said grain inventories could hit a record 25 million tonnes due to a sharp drop in exports, and could rise to 43 million tonnes in the worst-case scenario by the end of next season.
