The Ukrainian military announced today that it had regained control of the Black Sea island of Fidonisi, after raising the Ukrainian flag there a few days earlier, following the withdrawal of Russian forces from that island.
“We have practically restored our control over Fidonisi,” a senior official of the Ukrainian army’s general staff, Oleksiy Gromov, was quoted as saying by the Interfax-Ukraine news agency, adding that it was “physical control” by military forces.
According to him, the Ukrainian soldiers who participated in the operation have returned to their barracks. He did not specify whether soldiers remained on the island.
“Last week, we achieved arms control on the island and prevented the enemy from removing the remaining units, their weapons and military equipment,” he continued.
Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed it struck Fidonisi early Thursday with “high-precision missiles”, killing some of the Ukrainian soldiers who went to plant a flag there and forcing the survivors to flee.
However, Kyiv had announced on Monday that the Ukrainian flag was flying again on the island.
After coming under Russian control, the island was captured by the Ukrainians last week after heavy shelling.
Moscow claimed that it withdrew from this territory “as a sign of goodwill” after “achieving” the “set objectives”.
