Ukraine plans to use more than $460 million in seized assets from Russian banks to rebuild the country and compensate Ukrainians, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal told a conference in Lviv on Saturday.
In a Facebook post about the conference, Shmyhal said Ukraine was developing procedures to use confiscated assets to help Ukrainian citizens and their communities recover after the Russian invasion.
The government is working with allies to develop a system based on an international treaty that will help decide how to issue reparations to Ukrainians.
The system will include an international register of war losses, a commission to consider claims for compensation, and a fund from which compensation will be paid.
The prime minister also said on Saturday that Ukraine was using billions of dollars in assistance from the United States and the European Union to quickly restore the country’s damaged power infrastructure and other struggling sectors.
Kiev expects additional help to come from Norway and Japan.
