Ukraine says it advanced on Bakhmut, with 200 Russian soldiers killed and equipment destroyed

Front lines across Ukraine have seen heavy fighting over the past two days, with more than 20 clashes taking place in areas in the Donetsk region – mainly Lyman, Marinka and Bakhmut, according to the Ukrainian military.

In its operational update, the General Staff said that the Russians also carried out 25 airstrikes in the last day.

There was heavy Russian artillery and mortar fire in the Kupyansk area of Kharkiv, where the Russians have been trying to break through for over a month, according to the Ukrainians.

The General Staff insisted that all Russian efforts to seize territory had been thwarted. On the Donetsk front lines, the fighting was characterized by exchanges of indirect fire, but with little movement.

However, Ukrainians say they have the front around Bakhmut.

“[As tropas] retain the initiative, continue assault operations, and push the enemy back. On the last day, Ukrainian forces advanced from 600 to 1,000 meters on the southern and northern flanks around Bakhmut,” said Serhii Cherevatyi, spokesman for the Armed Forces East Group.

Nearly 200 Russian soldiers were killed the previous day and a lot of Russian equipment was destroyed, according to Cherevatyi.

A CNN cannot verify Ukrainian claims of gains or casualties on the battlefield.

Legend for the map: “Assessed” means that the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) has received reliable, independently verifiable information to demonstrate Russian control or advances in these areas. Russian advances are areas where Russian forces have operated or launched attacks, but do not control them. “Claimed” areas are where sources say control or counter-offensives are taking place, but ISW cannot corroborate or demonstrate that these are false.

In the south, where Ukrainian forces tried to break through Russian lines, the General Staff said a Russian effort to regain lost positions in the Novodarivka area had also failed.

Russian artillery continued to attack about 30 settlements along the front lines in the Zaporizhzhia region, it said.

In Kherson, Nataliya Humenyuk, a spokeswoman for Ukrainian forces in the south, said the Russians had struggled to regain positions on the east bank of the Dnipro River, which was flooded by recent damage to the New Kakhovka dam.

“Their work is complicated by the spread of intestinal infections,” said Humenyuk.
