Ukraine has removed millions of books from public libraries in its ongoing “de-Russification” effort, according to the Ukrainian parliament.
“There were guidelines for withdrawing books by authors who supported Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine,” said Yevheniya Kravchuk, a Ukrainian lawmaker who is deputy head of the Parliamentary Committee on Humanitarian and Information Policy.
“There is a list of those authors who have been sanctioned. Overall, the proportion of Ukrainian and Russian language books in libraries is quite dismal. That is why we are now talking about the need to renew collections and buy books in Ukrainian as soon as possible, ”he added.
By November last year, 19 million books had been withdrawn from public libraries following an initiative by the local Ministry of Culture to withdraw “certain types of books”.
Parliament said 44% of books in public libraries are still in Russian, with the rest in Ukrainian and other languages.
