Ukraine has asked the International Atomic Energy Agency to ensure that the “large list of equipment” needed for the country’s nuclear power plants in the midst of the Russian invasion is met, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said yesterday. Saturday.
Among the items requested by Kyiv are radioactivity meters, protective equipment, computer tools, diesel generators and other energy security systems, he explained.
“We will coordinate the delivery of assistance provided by the IAEA and its Member States” and part of the requested equipment “will be delivered directly to Ukraine’s nuclear facilities,” Grossi continued.
“The needs are great and I am very grateful for the significant support that our Member States have already made clear that they will provide.”
In Ukraine, 15 nuclear reactors are operating in four facilities, 7 of which are connected to the power grid, two at the plant in Zaporizhia, which has been occupied by the Russian army.
Mr. Grossi clarified that the IAEA does not yet receive direct data from its systems installed at the damaged Chernobyl plant.
The IAEA director general and specialists will visit the station, which was occupied by Russian troops shortly after the invasion on February 24, before leaving on March 31. Mr Grossi has promised that Chernobyl workers will be provided with equipment to measure their level of radioactivity and personal protective equipment during the visit.
