Kyiv announced today that it is building a concrete-reinforced wall and other fortifications on its border with Belarusa close Kremlin ally that Moscow used as a base for its February 24 invasion of Ukraine.
Kirylo Tymoshenko, an adviser to the Ukrainian president, said a 3km-long wall of barbed wire has been erected in Volyn province on the border with Belarus, which Kyiv says remains a threat. Sandbags and trenches have also been placed and created, he said.
“Our goal has not yet been achieved, but we will not disclose details”the official noted.
He added that other works are also underway in the Rivne and Zhytomyr regions that also border Belarus, without elaborating.
He released photos of security officers unrolling barbed wire next to a wall that appeared to be more than two meters high.
Her defense minister Ukrainian told Reuters yesterday that there was still a threat from Belarus, but that forces there were “in a passive position”. Ukraine’s border with Belarus is over 1,000 km long.
