For longer effective range missiles for the recently received HIMARS systems is pushing the USA the Ukrainian government, as Fedir Venislavski, a member of the defense affairs committee of the Ukrainian parliament, said yesterday.
Today, the Ukrainian army has missiles with a range of 70 kilometers, but the US has in its arsenal missiles capable of hitting targets at a distance of 300 to 500 kilometers. Kiev’s troops use Tochka-U missiles, with a range of 120 km, to hit targets at longer ranges, but the Soviet-designed weapons are not as accurate.
The eventual delivery of such missiles is of crucial importance, since would allow the Ukrainian military to target the bridge over the Kerch Strait, which connects mainland Russia with the annexed Crimean peninsula reports APE-BPE, citing DPA. This multi-billion dollar bridge is some 260 kilometers from the fronts. It is of strategic importance because through it the troops of Russia are supplied.
The representative of the Kremlin Dmitry Peskov, called Kiev’s declared intention to strike the bridge “terrorism”. However, he pointed out that it is adequately protected against missile attacks.
Kiev’s request for long-range missiles raises concerns in Washington as wellparticularly over the possibility that the Ukrainian armed forces could use US-made weapons systems to strike targets deep inside Russian territory, further escalating the armed conflict.
Weapons depots are also targeted
Yesterday Wednesday at least five civilians were killed in the city of Mykolayiv according to Kirill Tymoshenko, an official of the Ukrainian presidency. The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that Mykolaiv was shelled, but claimed that two command centers were hit and that some 350 Ukrainian soldiers were killed.
The city of Lugansk, the capital of the self-proclaimed People’s Republic of the same name, was hit repeatedly by HIMARS systems yesterday, pro-Russian separatist spokesman Andrey Marochko said via Telegram.
Serhii Haidai, the head of the Ukrainian civil-military administration in the Luhansk region, said for his part that weapons depots were targeted.
