Ukraine accuses Russia of attacking Southeast City for the second day in a row

The Ukraine Air Force stated that a new attack with Russian-guided missile and guided bombs hit the city of Sumy in northeastern Ukraine on Monday night (14), a day after a bombing killed 35 people in the city.

Local authorities said the missile attack occurred near the city and there were no reported victims. Verifications were being performed to determine the extent of possible damage.

The Russian Ministry of Defense said two of its missiles reached a meeting of Ukrainian military officers on Sunday (13) in Sumy. Ukraine called the attack of a deliberate action against civilians.

On Monday night, a statement from the Ukrainian Air Force said a missile had been released against Sumy and, within 20 minutes, a second statement reported that Russian aircraft was launching guided bombs on the city.

The public broadcaster Suspilne reported an explosion, without further details.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, speaking at his nightlife, said the number of victims in Sunday’s attack reached 35 dead and 119 injured. Forty people were in the hospital with 11 in serious condition.

Zelensky stated that nearly 50 countries and international organizations had sent support messages.

In a statement, the Russian Ministry of Defense accused Ukraine of using civilians as human shields by putting military facilities and holding events involving soldiers in the center of a densely populated city.

There was no immediate response from Kiev to the accusation of human shield use.

Ukraine Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Russian attacks against Sumy and Kryvyi Rih show that Russian President Vladimir Putin is seeking the continuity of war, not the end of it.

Kremlin, in turn, states that Russia is willing to seek lasting peace that addresses what he calls the roots of conflict.

The Russian statement said its forces fired “two ISKANDER-M tactical missiles against the meeting scene” of a tactical-operational group of the Ukraine Armed Forces.

According to the statement, more than 60 Ukrainian soldiers would have been killed in the attack.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the newspaper * Kommersant * that Ukrainian military leaders were gathered in Sumy with “Western colleagues,” but did not identify any western participants or evidenced to support the allegation.

The Reuters agency contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to comment on the matter, but has not obtained immediate response.

Strong response

On Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky demanded a firm international response against Moscow for the attack, which took place while US President Donald Trump faces difficulty moving on his promise to quickly end the war.

“Only scoundrels can act like this, taking the lives of ordinary people,” Zelensky said, noting that the attack happened on Ramos Sunday, the Sunday before Easter, when many Christians go to church.

Zelensky’s cabinet chief Andriy Yermak said Russia is trying to “kill as many civilians as possible.”

Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Kiev is “sharing detailed information about this war crime with all our partners and international institutions.”

The leaders of the United Kingdom, Germany and Italy condemned the attack. Trump, when asked about Russian bombing, said it was terrible.

“And I was told it was a mistake,” he said, without further details. “But I think it’s something horrible.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was asked at his daily press conference about how Kremlin sees Trump’s comment and whether the attack had been made by mistake.

He replied that Kremlin does not comment on the course of war, and that this is a matter of the Ministry of Defense.

“I can only repeat and remember the repeated statements of both our president and our military representatives that our attacks reach exclusively military targets and related to the military sector,” he said.

A United Nations monitoring mission reported in February that at least 12,654 Ukrainian civilians were killed in the first three years of the war and 29,392 were injured.

French President Emmanuel Macron said the attack on Sumy highlights the urgency of imposing a ceasefire on Russia, and Poland’s Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said Putin is mocking the goodwill of Trump and his administration.
