Ukraine: ‘A war is absurd in the 21st century’, Guterres complains of Borodyanka

“A war is irrational in the 21st century,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said today as he arrived in Borodyanka, a suburb of Kiev where Ukrainians accuse Russians of atrocities.

Guterres, who is paying his first visit to Ukraine since the war broke out on February 24, made the remarks in front of destroyed houses: “I imagine my family in one of these houses (…) I see my granddaughters running in panic “War is irrational in the 21st century, no war is acceptable in the 21st century.”

The secretary general The UN envoy also arrived in Bhutan, another suburb of Kiev where Russian soldiers have been accused of committing war crimes, and will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky later in the afternoon.

Guterres arrived in Ukraine last Wednesday night. On Tuesday, he visited Moscow, where he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin and asked him to work with the UN to evacuate civilians from areas bombed by the Russian army, mainly in eastern and southern Ukraine.
