UK says warship thwarted Houthi attack in Red Sea

A British warship, the HMS Diamond, thwarted a drone attack by Yemen's Houthi group in the Red Sea on Saturday, British officials said.

“Deploying its Sea Viper missile system, Diamond destroyed a drone without causing injury or damage to Diamond or its crew,” the Ministry of Defense said in a statement on Sunday.

“These intolerable and illegal attacks are completely unacceptable and it is our duty to protect freedom of navigation in the Red Sea.”

The Iran-aligned Houthi movement began a wave of drone and missile attacks on ships on November 19 in response to Israel's military operations in Gaza. On Friday (26), a tanker was attacked, causing a fire on board.

US and UK warplanes, ships and submarines have responded to the group's seaborne attacks with dozens of retaliatory strikes across Yemen against Houthi forces.
