UK says Putin could prolong Ukraine crisis for months

Russian President Vladimir Putin could prolong the crisis in Ukraine for months in a bid to challenge Western unity, British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said.

“Currently, there is no evidence that the Russians are withdrawing from border regions near Ukraine,” Truss wrote in The Daily Telegraph. “Russian military escalation shows no signs of slowing down.

“We should have no illusions, Russia can prolong this much longer in a blatant ploy to spend extra weeks – if not months – subverting Ukraine and defying Western unity,” Truss said.

Russia continues to prepare for a possible invasion and bridges have been built over the Pripyat River near the Belarus-Ukraine border, James Heappey, the British minister for the Armed Forces, told BBC radio.

Russia says the West is gripped by hysteria and Russophobia, and Moscow has derided claims by US security chiefs that an invasion of Ukraine is imminent.

The Russian Defense Ministry on Tuesday published footage to demonstrate that it was returning some troops to the base after exercises.
