UK sanctions Iran for ‘kamikaze’ drones used by Russians in Ukraine

The UK is imposing new sanctions on Iran for providing Russia with “kamikaze” drones used to bomb Ukraine, British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said.

In a statement, Cleverly accused Iran of being a “warmonger” by profiting from “abominable attacks by Russia on Ukrainian citizens and adding to the suffering of the people and the destruction of critical infrastructure”.

The new sanctions correspond to measures agreed by the European Union on Thursday (21), targeting three individuals and a company responsible for supplying drones to Moscow.

Subject to asset freezes and travel bans are: Major General Mohammad Hossein Bagheri, chairman of the General Staff of the Armed Forces; Brigadier General Seyed Hojjatollah Qureishi, the top Iranian negotiator in the deal that provided Russia with Iran-produced drones; and Brigadier General Saeed Aghajani, head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) – a branch of the Iranian military.

One entity – Aerospace Force UAV Command – reported to have been in Ukraine’s temporarily controlled territories, advising Russian forces on how to use drones, is also subject to an asset freeze.

Iran has denied supplying weapons to Russia despite evidence to the contrary.
