The UK Meteorological Office declared a national emergency on Friday, issuing an “extreme heat” red alert for parts of England for Monday (18) and Tuesday (19) of next week. , when temperatures can reach record highs.

“Exceptional temperatures, perhaps record ones, are expected to occur on Monday and again on Tuesday,” the Met Office said on its website.

“Nights are also expected to be exceptionally hot for the UK, especially in urban areas. This will likely lead to widespread impacts on people and infrastructure.”

The highest temperature ever recorded in the UK was 38.7°C at the University of Cambridge Botanical Garden on 25 July 2019.

Earlier this week, the UK Health Safety Agency body and the Met Office issued a Level 3 heat alert for some parts of the country, which requires health and social services to take extra measures to protect the vulnerable. .

Red alert, level 4, is defined on the Met office’s website as being hit “when a heat wave is so severe and/or prolonged that its effects extend outside the health and social care system. At this level, illness and death can occur among the healthy population, not just high-risk groups.”
