The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, will arrive in Israel on Thursday morning (18). The country will be the first stop on a two-day trip through the Middle East.
“Tonight (Wednesday) the Prime Minister will begin a two-day trip to Israel and the wider region to meet with counterparts from across the Middle East,” the Downing Street statement said.
Sunak will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israeli President Isaac Herzog before “traveling to a number of other regional capitals”, according to the statement.
During meetings in Israel, Sunak is expected to convey “his condolences for the terrible loss of life in Israel and Gaza over the last two weeks as a result of the brutal terrorist attacks by Hamas”.
Sunak is also expected to pressure Israel to open a humanitarian corridor to Gaza “as quickly as possible” so that British citizens trapped in the area can leave, UK officials said.
The UK prime minister described Tuesday’s deadly explosion at a hospital in Gaza as a “watershed moment” for leaders in the region and elsewhere to step up efforts to avoid “a further dangerous escalation of the conflict”.
While the statement did not say which regional capitals Sunak will visit, it was confirmed that UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly will visit Egypt, Turkey and Qatar in the “coming days”.
