Britain’s leading Conservative politicians have responded with surprise to Labour’s projected landslide victory in Thursday’s (4) general election.
Ruth Davidson, the former leader of the Scottish Conservative Party, told Sky News: “There is no disguising it, this is a massacre.”
Former Conservative justice secretary Robert Buckland, who is set to lose his seat in Parliament, told Sky News he was “used to the look of defeat and I am prepared for it”.
Buckland added that he hoped his political life would continue. “I will be leaving parliament to dedicate more time to politics,” he joked.
Steve Baker, who was Rishi Sunak’s Minister of State for Northern Ireland, told the BBC that “it’s a pretty devastating night for the Conservative Party”. Baker is also expected to lose his seat.
The former minister added that he had “a lot of respect for Rishi Sunak”. He later said: “I think he will do what he believes is in the national interest.”
Just before polls closed at 10pm local time, Sunak thanked X voters.
The UK Prime Minister said: “To the hundreds of Conservative candidates, thousands of volunteers and millions of voters: thank you for your hard work, thank you for your support and thank you for your vote.”
Exit polls suggest Labour will win in landslide victory
The UK’s main exit poll indicates that Keir Starmer’s Labour Party will win a landslide victory in Thursday’s (4) general election.
The survey indicates that the center-left party will be able to form a majority of 170 seats in the House of Commons, the lower house of the UK Parliament.
According to the survey, the Labour Party is expected to elect 410 parliamentarians, compared to 131 for the Conservative Party.
The Liberal Democrat Party, in turn, is expected to elect 61 representatives, and Reform UK, 13.
Labour’s victory ends 14 consecutive years of governments by the rival right-wing Conservative Party and is expected to make Starmer the seventh Labour leader to take over as prime minister.
If the poll numbers are indeed confirmed, it will be the Conservative Party’s worst defeat in its nearly 200 years.
