Two terrorist attacks in the Somali capital in a few hours

Members of the terrorist armed group Shebab, which swears allegiance to Al Qaeda, opened fire with mortars in its capital Somalia, hitting points near the presidential palace, police said.

At least five people were injured and there may be dead, police officer Mohamed Dahir told the German Agency. It is not clear what the purpose of this action was.

A few hours earlier At least ten people have been killed in a suicide bombing in Mogadishu targeting the police chief in the region where the Somali capital is administratively under. Dozens of other people were injured and homes destroyed. Police officer Fahran Mohammed is safe.

Shebab (“the youth”, in Arabic) took responsibility for both actions via its radio station, Andalus.

The organization has been fighting for fifteen years to overthrow the Western-backed federal government and impose its own regime based on its fundamentalist interpretation of Islamic law. Somalia is currently going through a deep political crisis.

On July 3, Sebab’s suicide bomber struck a Mogadishu teahouse, a few hundred meters from the intelligence headquarters, killing ten people and injuring dozens more.

The terrorist organization, which covers areas in the south and central parts of the country, often launches attacks against security forces and civilians in the capital. They controlled parts of the city until they were driven out by these troops of AMISOM, the African Union military mission, in 2011.
