Two soldiers from the Israel were killed in border incident that occurred on Saturday morning on the southern border with Egyptas announced by the Israeli armed forces.
“This morning, a security incident occurred in the area of the Paran Regional Brigade. Two Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers, a man and a woman, were killed by gunfire near the border (with Egypt). The episode is being reviewed. The IDF is conducting searches in the area,” the Israeli armed forces said in a statement.
The Israeli army had initially refused to confirm these deaths, which had been reported by Israeli media, because the families had not yet been notified.
In addition, the armed forces said that soldiers killed an “attacker” in an exchange of fire on the Israeli-Egyptian border in the Negev desert.
“During a confrontation with an attacker on Israeli soil (…) the soldiers responded with live fire and neutralized him”, the army had announced. A military spokesman later clarified that the attacker was killed.
THE Egypt it was the first Arab country to sign a peace treaty with Israel in 1979. However, drug smugglers operate along the border between the two countries, and in recent years there have been exchanges of fire between smugglers and Israeli soldiers stationed along the border.
