At least 10 Jewish entities in Brazil received an email threatening attacks. The message, to which the CNN had access, it was fired last Monday (6).
A CNN found that the email is not part of the Federal Police operation this Wednesday (8), whose targets were terrorists linked to Hezbollah, a Shiite Islamic extremist group that operates in Lebanon and receives funding from Iran, who were planning attacks in the country .
However, the discovery that preparatory actions were underway for attacks on Jewish community buildings in Brazil, coupled with the content of the message, left the Israeli community scared, according to reports.
Among the recipients of the message sent on Monday are synagogues across the country. The threats are set against the backdrop of the conflict between Israel and Hamas. The text talks about the situation in the Gaza Strip.
In the email, the authors of the threat state that “the time has come for revenge against the Zionists” and that “there will be no safe place in Brazil” for defenders of Israel.
The Federal Police arrested two people suspected of links to Hezbollah in Brazil and carried out 11 search and seizure warrants in Brasília, São Paulo and Minas Gerais.
One of those arrested in São Paulo was detained upon disembarking from a trip to Lebanon. According to the PF, the operation, called “Trapiche”, also aims to obtain evidence of possible recruitment of Brazilians to carry out extremist acts.
In a statement, the PF stated that recruiters and recruits must answer for the crimes of “constituting or joining a terrorist organization” and “carrying out preparatory acts of terrorism”.
If added together, the maximum penalties for such crimes can reach 15 years and six months in prison.
