Twitter: Donald Trump’s account suspended “permanently”

Two days after the spectacular invasion of the Capitol, marked by the death of four protesters and a police officer, Twitter announced that it was suspending Donald Trump’s account “permanently”. A decision that leaves the American president a little more alone, now deprived of his favorite communication channel, on which he has built his political ascent. After suspending his account for 12 hours on Wednesday, Twitter said it was taking this unprecedented measure in the face of “the risk of new incitement to violence”.

Donald Trump used another account, that of the US Presidency (@POTUS) to reply. “Twitter has gone even further in its muzzling of free speech, and tonight Twitter employees coordinated with Democrats and the radical left to remove my account from their platform, to silence me – and YOU, the 75,000,000 great patriots who voted for me, ”wrote the outgoing president. But this message was also almost immediately deleted by the platform.

The president more isolated than ever

Recluse in the White House, released by many Republican tenors, it is precisely from a tweet, laconic, that he had earlier announced that he would not attend, contrary to tradition, the inauguration ceremony of his successor. This symbolic post will remain the last from @realDonaldTrump and its roughly 88 million subscribers at the time of its suspension. His absence on January 20 “is a good thing”, replied Joe Biden, during an exchange with journalists from his stronghold of Wilmington, while stressing that Vice-President Mike Pence would, on the other hand, be welcome to the investiture ceremony.

“My main goal is to bring the country together,” said the president-elect, carefully avoiding entering the debate on an early departure of the Republican billionaire. For her part, the leader of the Democrats in the United States Congress Nancy Pelosi said she had spoken with the United States military to ensure that Donald Trump, an “unbalanced president”, could not use nuclear codes. Under fire from critics, accused of undermining institutions and adding fuel to the fire, the billionaire tried Thursday evening to calm things down, marking a spectacular break after weeks of inflammatory rhetoric.
