Rosamond Gifford Zoo, located in the state of New York, United States, witnessed the birth of twin elephants. The birth of two Asian elephants took place on October 24, according to the zoo’s press release.
The birth of the duo is considered rare. Less than 1% of elephant pregnancies are twins. And when they are, they rarely survive.
The first baby was born around 2 am, weighing 220 pounds. Then, 10 hours later, the mother elephant gave birth to the second calf, much to the surprise of the monitoring team. The second newborn weighed 107 kilograms, but was “visibly weaker than the first”.
There has never been a recorded case of surviving twin elephants in the United States, the zoo says, making the birth a “historic moment” for the facility.
Asian elephants are endangered and are found throughout South and Southeast Asia.
