Turkey’s Deputy Defense Minister will meet with representatives of Russia and Ukraine in the Turkish capital on Friday (5), to talk about extending the grain agreement, which expires on May 18.
Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said in a statement that “during the meeting, some issues, especially the grain initiative, will be discussed.”
“We expect the grain deal to continue as it is. Because this agreement is very important for regional peace and stability and for countries in need. In this context, we can say that the parties are willing to extend the term. Our desire is to extend this initiative smoothly.”
Russian state media RIA Novosti quoted an unnamed Russian Foreign Ministry official as saying a deal “has not yet been closed”. Ukraine did not comment on the proposed meeting.
Last month, Russia threatened to scrap the Black Sea grain deal, seen as critical to solving the world’s hunger crisis, if the G7 banned exports to the country.
