THE Turkish police arrested a pro-Kurdish member of parliament today after photos were published showing him with PKK members.
Interior Minister Suleiman Soylu announced that MP Semra Guzel of the People’s Democratic Party (HDP) was arrested while traveling in northwestern Turkey in possession of “a fake passport”. Tthe parliament waived his immunity after pro-government media released photos of him showing him with armed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) fighters.
The Turkish authorities consider the HDP political organ of the PKK and have initiated procedures that may lead to the banning of the party. The HDP, for its part, denies that it maintains ties with the PKK, but some of its members have relations with wanted rebels or refuse to condemn their actions.
Many HDP members were arrested in the crackdown that followed the 2016 coup attempt.
