One tunnel that would be used for prisoners to escape was found by the Penitentiary Administration Secretariat (Seap) this Monday (2), at the Vicente Piragibe Penal Institute, in the Gericinó Penitentiary Complex, in Bangu, West Zone of Rio de Janeiro .

The mass escape plan involved Comando Vermelho inmates who are serving their sentences in a semi-open regime at the prison, according to Seap. The prison has highly dangerous criminals.

In a statement, the state’s Penitentiary Administration Secretariat stated that the entrance to the tunnel was discovered in the prison unit’s vegetable garden and that it was possibly dug by inmates who worked there.

The Vicente Piragibe Penal Institute has inmates such as Márcio Aurélio Martinez Martelo, known as ‘Bolado da Providencia’, Bruno Eduardo da Silva Procopio, known as ‘Piná’, Ilan Nogueira Sales, known as ‘Capoeira’, and Gilberto Soares Alves, known as ‘Caveirinha’.

The information was obtained by the Seap Operational Management Sub-Secretariat and the Gericinó Prison Units Coordination.

“All those involved are being identified and will be isolated,” said Seap secretary Maria Rosa Lo Duca Nebel.

The department has opened an investigation to determine the facts and to try to identify those responsible. In addition, a police report will also be filed so that an expert analysis can be carried out at the scene.
