The 280 containers of waste had been mislabeled and were against the internationally set standards of importing waste. The Arabic magazine Mugtama then reported that a local company had signed an agreement worth $6.5 billion with Italy to import 120,000 tons of waste from Italy every year.
Upon the facts being bought into limelight, the judicial authorities in Tunisia started an investigation into the process.
