In 2016, a venture capitalist and Yale Law graduate named J.D. Vance published a memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy.” The instant bestseller turned Vance into a media star and was later adapted into an Oscar-nominated film directed by Ron Howard.
Eight years after its publication, Vance’s book returned to the bestseller lists, thanks to his nomination as Donald Trump’s running mate.
Less than 24 hours after Trump announced that Vance was his choice for vice president, “Midnight Hill” shot to the top of Amazon’s best-sellers chart.
On Tuesday (16), the 2020 film adaptation of “Once Upon a Hill,” starring Glenn Close and Amy Adams, was the sixth most-watched film in Netflix’s Top 10 in the United States.
Viewership for the film increased 1,179% on Netflix compared to the day before Vance was nominated for vice president, according to research from Luminate.
The survey also adds that the film was watched for 19.2 million minutes on Monday (15), jumping from the 1.5 million minutes that the film was watched on Sunday (14), when rumors about Vance’s appointment emerged.
When the film was released, it received mostly negative reviews and was widely panned by critics, although Close and Adams received praise for their performances portraying Vance’s grandmother and mother, respectively, as did actor Gabriel Basso, who played a younger version of the American.
Close was notably nominated at both the Oscars and the Razzie Awards, which is the ceremony that infamously honors the worst in cinema each year.
“Once Upon a Dream” chronicles Vance’s childhood, which he wrote was plagued by poverty, abuse and his mother’s addiction.
At the time of the film’s release, the book was widely discussed as an explanation for Trump’s rise among the white working class.
As the book’s popularity surged after Vance was announced as Trump’s vice president, Goodreads, a social cataloging site for book recommendations, temporarily restricted actions on “Once Upon a Hillbilly Elegy,” including submitting ratings and reviews.
A pop-up alert on Goodreads said: “This may be because we have detected unusual behavior that does not follow our review guidelines.”
A Goodreads representative declined to comment on the investigation. CNN about the specific type of activity on Vance’s book that was detected by the site, but in accordance with the company’s community guidelines, Goodreads rolled out the ability to limit a book’s reviews and ratings earlier this year.
