The White House said on Tuesday that US President Donald Trump wants Harvard to apologize after the university rejected the government’s demands.
“With regard to Harvard, as I said, the president was quite clear: they must follow federal law,” press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters.
Pressed on President Donald Trump’s threat on Tuesday of Taxing Harvard as a political entity and removing his tax exemption status, Leavitt postponed questions to the IRS (IRS). But she said in general that the university needed to apologize.
Trump, Leavitt said, “want to see Harvard apologize, and Harvard should apologize for the blatant anti-Semitism that occurred on his campus against Jewish American students.”
Harvard rejected numerous demands of the Trump administration, which, according to her, would give control of the institution to a conservative government that portrays universities as dangerously leftists.
White House Secretary Karoline Leavitt has classified government action as an effort to contain anti -Semitism on university campuses. But the government also requires the university to eliminate its programs of diversity, equity and inclusion, prohibits the use of masks in campus protests and ensures merit -based hiring practices.
Leavitt highlighted the statements made during an audience in Congress by former University Rector Claudine Gay, who said that inciting Jewish genocide “can” violate Harvard rules on intimidation and harassment “depending on context.” Gay apologized for the statements.
The press secretary also highlighted what she described how Harvard’s failure in disciplining students involved in a campus camp and the interruption of classes. “The president believes Harvard should apologize to his Jewish-American students for allowing such a blatant behavior,” Leavitt said.
She also reiterated questions about the university’s federal funding future, an issue that the Trump government believes to be political.
“I think the president is also asking a good question: over $ 2 billion for Harvard when they have a patrimonial fund of more than $ 50 billion – why are American taxpayers subsidizing a university that already has billions of dollars in the bank? And we should certainly not be funding a place where there is such a serious anti -Semiticism,” she said.
