Trump: US ships should not pay to use Panama and Suez channels

United States President Donald Trump said on Saturday (26) believing that US ships should not have to pay to use the Panama channel or the Suez channel in Egypt.

“American and commercially commercial shipping ships should be allowed to navigate for free through the channels of Panama and Suez! These channels would not exist without the United States of America,” Trump wrote in a Social Truth publication.

Trump added in the publication that he asked the Secretary of State Marco Rubio “to take care immediately and record this situation!”

Republican comments come on the wake of their repeated threats of resuming the Panama Canal. He accused Panama of charging US “exorbitant tariffs” by using the crucial waterway.

The channel, built by the Americans, was inaugurated in 1914 and controlled by the United States until a 1977 agreement provided for its eventual transfer to Panama.

The channel was operated together by the two countries until the Panamanian government retained full control after 1999.
