Former US President Donald Trump said on Thursday (5) that Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and owner of X, has agreed to lead the government efficiency commission that the Republican candidate for the American presidency has proposed to create if he is reelected in November.
The commission was first proposed by Musk, which Trump spoke about as he unveiled a series of new economic plans during an appearance at the Economic Club of New York.
“At the suggestion of Elon Musk, who has given me his full support, I will create a Commission on Government Efficiency that will be charged with conducting a financial and performance audit of the entire federal government and making recommendations for drastic reforms. We have to do this, we can’t go on as we are now,” Trump said during his speech in New York City.
“Elon, who is not very busy, has agreed to head up this task force. It will be interesting, if he has the time, and he would be good at it. In any case, he has agreed to do it,” he added.
Donald Trump and Elon Musk spoke for more than two hours at X on August 12. During the meeting, Musk offered to take on a role in a potential Trump administration, helping to control government spending. “I would be happy to help with this committee,” he said.
The former US president answered friendly questions that led him to political campaign talking points; at the same time, he criticized current Vice President Kamala Harris’s positions on the economy and immigration.
