Trump says he expects Ukraine and Russia to reach an agreement this week

US President Donald Trump said on Sunday, waiting for Russia and Ukraine to reach an agreement this week.

“I hope Russia and Ukraine will agree this week. Both will start doing big business with the United States of America, which are thriving, and will make a fortune,” the Republican published in the Social Truth.

This Sunday (20), Ukraine proposed that Russia suspendes attacks with drones and missiles to civil infrastructure for at least 30 days.

The offer was announced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, this Sunday (20), by social networks.

“If Russia does not agree with this measure, it will be proof that it intends to continue doing only things that destroy human lives and extend the war,” Zelensky said in X.

Russia and Ukraine blamed themselves on Sunday for violating the ceasefire of one day at Easter declared by President Vladimir Putin.

Putin, who sent thousands of Russian troops to Ukraine in February 2022, ordered his forces to interrupt all military activity along the front line in the three-year war until midnight on Sunday, Moscow time (18h, Brasília time).

Russian news agency Tass quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, stating that there was no Putin order to extend the ceasefire. “There were no other orders,” Peskov said, quoted by the agency, when asked if the ceasefire could be prolonged.

Ukraine Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Moscow’s actions in the coming days “will reveal Russia’s true attitude toward US peace efforts” and the 30-day proposed ceasefire.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Russia was pretending to meet Easter ceasefire, but performed hundreds of artillery attacks on Saturday night, and more on Sunday.

Russia launched 67 midnight attacks until 8pm local time (14h, Brasília time), wrote Zelensky at X.

“Either Putin has no full control over his army, or the situation proves that Russia has no intention of making a genuine movement to end the war and is only interested in favorable public relations coverage,” Zelensky posted.

“However, there have been no air strike alerts today. Therefore, this is a format of ceasefire that has been achieved and is the easiest to extend,” he said, proposing that Russia abandon attacks with drones and missiles against civilian targets for at least 30 days.

If Russia does not agree, it will be proof that it intends to continue doing only things that destroy human lives and prolong the war, he added.

The Russian Ministry of Defense said Ukraine has broken the ceasefire more than 1,000 times, damaging the infrastructure and causing deaths from civilians.

The ministry said the Ukrainian forces have shot Russian positions 444 times and has accounted for more than 900 Ukrainian drone attacks, including in Crimea and Russian border areas of Bryansk, Kursk and Belgorod regions.

“As a result, there are deaths and injuries between the civilian population, as well as damage to civil facilities,” the ministry said.

The Ukrainian military previously stated that the front line activity had decreased. Some Russian military bloggers also said the front line activity had decreased substantially.

Reuters could not immediately check the battlefield reports.
