WASHINGTON (AP) — This Thursday, President Donald Trump pledged not to partake in the following week’s discussion with Presidential nominee Joe Biden after coordinators reported it will happen virtually due to the president being positive for COVID-19.
“I’m not going to do a virtual debate” with Biden, Trump revealed to Fox News, minutes after the Commission on Presidential Debates reported the changes because of Trump’s health condition.
Even as Biden’s campaign promised that its applicant will take an interest, Trumps announcement cast genuine questions on whether the event will take place or not.
Kate Bedingfield, Biden campaign manager said in a statement “Vice President Biden looks forward to speaking directly to the American people.”
Even as Trump has attempted to underplay it, it is more evidence that the race remains defined by the virus.
As cited by the nonpartisan Commission Presidential Debates there’s a need “to protect the health and safety of all involved with the second presidential debate.” The moderator and participants will remain in Miami whereas, the candidates will “participate from separate remote locations,” it said.
It is more evidence that the race remains defined by the virus, even as Trump has attempted to underplay it.
This whole situation occurred a week before the face off of both the candidates in Miami.
Though it’s been a week since the President was diagnosed with Covid-19 but he tweeted back on Tuesday that “it will be great” referring to the debating Biden on stage in Miami.
As for Biden, he said that as long as Trump does not recover from Covid-19, him and Trump “shouldn’t have a debate.”
Biden said, “looking forward to being able to debate him” and, “we’re going to have to follow very strict guidelines.”
The President was tested positive for Coronavirus on Thursday last week, just two days after he debated with Biden in Cleveland, in person, for the very first time.
Even though there was plenty of focus on social distancing while the debate was held, health concerns for Biden arose when the Trump was diagnosed with Covid-19. Biden had to take multiple Coronavirus tests before coming back to the campaign trail.
Though the President was still positive for Covid-19 upon being discharged from Walter Reed National Military, his doctors have still not provided any news about his health.
