Trump nominates Jamieson Greer as US trade representative

President-elect Donald Trump has announced Jamieson Greer as his pick to serve as the next United States Trade Representative.

Greer knows the role well, having served as chief of staff to Trump’s first-term trade representative, Robert Lighthizer. At the time, the administration implemented widespread tariffs on China and other countries, as well as signed the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

Trump has routinely referred to the passage of the USMCA trade deal — which replaced the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA — as a political victory and a highlight of his presidency.

If confirmed by the Senate, Greer would take office while Trump is expected to pursue an ambitious trade agenda.

Since winning the election, Trump has promised to implement new tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China on the first day of his administration – until, he said, the countries stop the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs across the border.

During the campaign, Trump has repeatedly said he will impose tariffs of 10% or 20% on all imports arriving in the US, as well as a tariff of more than 60% on all Chinese imports.

The president-elect has described tariffs as a tool that can be used to punish other countries for unfair trade practices, boost American production and bring in billions of dollars to help pay for the extension of tax cuts he signed into law during his first administration.

The threat of tariffs could also be used as a negotiating tactic, as Trump has committed to renegotiating the USMCA.

Greer, speaking about other countries’ trade and tax policies, told The New York Times in June that “if we level that playing field, it will make it so that Americans don’t have to compete unfairly.”

Most recently, he worked as a partner on the international trade team at the law firm King & Spalding, according to his firm biography. In this role, he covered cases on topics such as trade politics and negotiations and enforcement of trade agreements. He previously focused on trade-related matters in private practice and served in the U.S. Air Force Judge Advocate General’s Corps, during which time he was deployed to Iraq, according to the biography.
