Trump government fires lawyer who defended man deported by mistake

The Justice Department dismissed an immigration lawyer that the Trump government accused of sabotaging its judicial case about the mistaken deportation of a Salvadoran, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Erez Reuveno defended the government’s case in the deportation of Kilmar Armando Abargo Garcia, who, according to the Trump government, was sent to his homeland, El Salvador, last month due to an administrative error, despite a court order so that he was not deported.

Reuse was initially placed on administrative license days after expressing frustration with the government’s inability to answer the questions of a case judge.

In court, he declared the government’s position: “Our only arguments are jurisdictional. He should not have been sent to El Salvador.”

Asked why the US could not simply ask for the return of Abrego Garcia, Reuveno said: “The first thing I did when I received this case was to ask my clients the same question,” adding that he did not receive a direct answer.

The Wall Street Journal reported the resignation of Reuveno.

During a meeting at the Oval Hall on Monday (14), which included President Donald Trump and Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele, Stephen Miller, one of the Republican’s leading advisors, contested the justice department of a deportation.

“The only mistake made was a lawyer to have inserted an incorrect line in a lawsuit that has since been removed from office,” Miller said.

The Department of Justice did not change its characterization of the error that led to Vugo Garcia back to El Salvador.

Attorney General Pam Bondi, as he removed Reuse, questioned how he conducted the case in court.

“Under my orientation, every court lawyer is required to zealously defend the interests of the United States. Any lawyer who does not comply with this guidance will face consequences,” she told a statement to CNN .

Bondi issued a memorandum on his first day as a Attorney General demanding that lawyers “zealously” advocate administrative positions or make disciplinary measures and possible dismissal.
