Trump expects Meloni to be a “bridge” between USA and the European Union

Prior to the official meeting between President Donald Trump and the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, senior US government officials said they see her as a “valuable interlocutor” with the European Union-including issues such as trade, immigration and efforts to end Ukraine war.

“President Trump will not only focus on how the Italian market can be opened, but also how they can help us with the rest of Europe,” a high White House employee said in a conference conferencing that anticipated the visit.

Another high employee said the visit would also focus on the “role of Meloni as a key force in Europe and a voice that widely agrees with the president in many questions, such as immigration and the need to end the war in Ukraine.”

“We certainly see it as a valuable interlocutor with the European Union,” the authority continued.

Trump and Meloni, from the right, share similar ideological lines and have a positive relationship – the president praised Meloni publicly, and she was the only European leader invited to Trump’s second possession.

But the strength of the relationship between them can be tested today, as the prime minor should press the Republican on commercial and tariff issues.

The second authority said the president is “taking it very seriously” and that the White House is “ready to close agreements.”

In addition to trade, the senior authorities reported that the two leaders should discuss defense, maritime transport and the role of Italy in the India-E-Europa India-Euente Economic Corridor (IMEC).

They also want to talk about ways to increase Italy’s space cooperation and interest in releasing “American energy exports to the rest of the world.”

Authorities said the meeting had been in the “queue” a long time ago and was not scheduled in a direct reaction to Trump’s rates.
