Trump chooses Steven Cheung as White House Communications Director

President-elect Donald Trump appointed Steven Cheung this Friday (15) as White House communications director. With that, Cheung was promoted from campaign spokesman to one of the United States government’s top communications roles.

Cheung was named assistant to the president and director of communications. During Trump’s first term, Cheung served as director of strategic response.

As part of the same batch of appointments, the transition announced that Trump ally Sergio Gor will also serve as assistant to the president as well as director of presidential personnel.

“Steven Cheung and Sergio Gor have been trusted advisors since my first presidential campaign in 2016 and have continued to uphold America First principles throughout my first term, until our historic victory in 2024,” Trump said in a statement. “I am thrilled to have you in the White House,” he said in the note.

The position of White House communications director is separate from the role of White House press secretary, although people have served in both roles simultaneously in the past. Trump has not yet announced a press secretary.

Cheung has long been known as a strong supporter of Trump, but he has played this role mainly behind the camera. He is very active on social media, where he continues to be a voracious defender of his boss.

He takes on a position that saw unusual turnover during Trump’s first term. During this term, six different people held this title at seven different periods. None lasted more than a year.

Anthony Scaramucci was in office for just 11 days in Trump’s first term. Both he and another White House communications director, Stephanie Grisham, broke with their former boss.

Before working on Trump’s first campaign, Cheung was a spokesperson for the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The ties between the UFC and the president-elect are strong. Trump frequently watches UFC fights in person. And he is a longtime friend of UFC president Dana White, who spoke at the Republican National Convention in July.

Trump has chosen close allies to set up the new government. Among the names already announced are Marco Rubio as Secretary of State and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to take over the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
