United States President-elect Donald Trump said he has chosen Mauricio Claver-Carone as his special envoy for Latin America.
Claver-Carone was president of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), but was ousted over allegations of an unethical romantic relationship.
He stepped down in 2022 after an investigation determined he had a romantic relationship with a female subordinate, the Associated Press reported at the time, which he denies.
Claver-Carone also served as director of the National Security Council in the Western Hemisphere during Trump’s first administration.
“Over the past four years, chaos and anarchy have engulfed our borders. It is time to restore order to our hemisphere. Mauricio knows the region and knows how to put America’s interests [Estados Unidos] in FIRST PLACE,” Trump highlighted in the statement announcing his selection.
“He also knows the serious threats we face from mass illegal immigration and fentanyl,” the Republican added.
Claver-Carone was the first non-Latin American president of the IDB.
