Trump attack: Gunman researched Michigan mass shooting

The man who tried to assassinate Donald Trump researched information about the arrest of a mass shooter in Michigan and his parents, who were prosecuted over a 2021 high school shooting.

Thomas Matthew Crooks also visited websites on how to build explosives, and in the minutes before he fired the shots, he took a screenshot of a live stream of the Butler, Pennsylvania, rally.

A week before the attack, Crooks researched the date of the Democratic National Convention and where Trump planned to speak, as well as other research on the former president and President Joe Biden.

Those details were among information shared by people familiar with the investigation and by officials from the FBI and the Secret Service at a meeting with lawmakers on Wednesday (17).

Investigators remain unsure about possible motives for the attempted assassination of the former president on Saturday (13), finding little information to indicate political or ideological intentions for the attack.

Still, the alleged killer’s recent online trail has provided investigators with a detailed picture of his possible mindset before the attack.

FBI behavioral experts are building a profile of Crooks based on the findings, agents told lawmakers.
